Case No.F4: The Image of the ██████

[Note: this file was redacted from evidence and analysis regarding the Flux event.]

Case Date: 21st November, 1967.
Case Referral Tag: The Medderton Incident
Case Classification: Four-N-G-Three-L-Five
Entities Involved: ███████ ██████, Key Individual 13, other witnesses.

Note: For reasons that should be self-explanatory, this document contains no photographs of the ███████ ██████, nor any other visual representation. Also due to abilities of the ███████ ██████ that are still under analysis, readers are instructed not to view this document on a mobile device or handheld reader of any kind; early findings suggest that less personal devices like laptop and desktop computers are far more secure.

Amendment to Note: Following completion of research, this agent has elected to further censor this document, removing all instances of the names of the concerned entities as well as select other sections of dangerous information. This agent recommends similar censorship immediately be applied to every recording of the entities, of any kind. And a precaution to the reader, in what few words can safely be used: Don’t think. Think, and you’re dead.

Case Summary: Given the great many years since the prior recorded encounter with the ███████ ██████ — some time in the 1930s, although due to the nature of the encounter, and the very nature of the ███████ ██████ themselves, accounts differ. (See: The Manhattan Incident [disambiguation] for more details) — and also given their recently granted status as a recurring threat of Level 1 Significance (see related files: The Master, Cybermen, and Daleks [note: expanded analysis scheduled]) it is unsurprising to this agent that the ███████ ██████ resurfaced in this 1967 Medderton Incident. However this case is of particular interest, being differentiated from those other Incidents by a number of outstanding factors: Most notably, the involvement of Key Individuals never previously associated with the ███████ ██████; new evidence developing the ███████ ██████’ methods, motives, and nature; and thorough this Incidents’ relation to five coinciding cases (see: Flux. [Note: please define term]). Exactly how related it is to those Incidents, and whether or not that was always the case, is a matter of some speculation. (See: Rewriting the Incident.)

In this document, this agent will present uncovered information, as well as commentary on its implications, and any other insight arising from her research.

Connection to Flux Event: One of the clearest and most important differences between prior encounters and this one is the close connection between the Medderton Incident and five other cases on file. This stands in contrast to the infamous Wester Drumlins Incident, which is notable for its isolation from concurrent cases in what this agent assumed would eventuate as the ███████ ██████’ primary mode of engagement. Despite some valuable new data explored in later sections (see: Changes from Prior Encounters), it is worth noting that no witness testimonies nor other evidence are able to describe a resolution to this incident, and even on thorough examination of the events, it seems as if we don’t have the full story (see: Rewriting the Incident). While related documents explore the Flux event itself, its worth noting here that while the Medderton Incident certainly seems to coincide with it, it is hard to draw any direct or clearly meaningful connection between them (although much the same can be said for the connections between any of the Flux cases). This agent found that cross-referencing accounts from the ongoing Flux event while examining the Medderton files proved unhelpful and disorientating.

It is similarly hard to draw from these accounts any clear conception of the people involved in the Medderton Incident. While, as usual, the Key Individual surrounds herself with a great many others, available evidence provides very little insight into who they are, although this seems to be a broader problem than with just this incident. One Professor Eustacius Jericho stands out in accounts, but after the events of the incident seems to disappear, much the same as the Key Individual’s travelling companions [note: this is about the extent of the data available on the two(?) of them] seem to disappear from the events of this incident near its beginning. There are suggestions that the individuals were temporally displaced to 1901 by the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒, but no evidence has been found of anything significant at all happening there at that time, nor in the following years.

Bizarrely, one witness quotes the term “quantum extraction” as if it were meaningfully understood. This seems to refer to the ███████ ██████ transporting Medderton from its original time and place, although it is difficult to see why this would be necessary, but might explain the near-total disconnect from the broader Flux event. The fact that accounts of this incident end so abruptly, and cross-references with other cases, together suggest that, ultimately, the ███████ ██████’ involvement in Medderton was not in service of the ███████ ██████ themselves in their own right, but rather the ‘power of their image’ was used by Division (note: please define term), which is insight into the scope and significance of that organisation. Consequently, it transpires that this Incident in fact reveals more about Division than it does the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒, which while not the expected outcome of this research, is valuable information nonetheless. [Note: however, revelations about Division from later cases muddy the understanding developed here significantly, and despite overwhelming volumes of explanatory testimony, this agent struggles to put together a coherent picture of their aims or intentions (see: other Flux files).]

Rewriting the Incident: One suggested explanation for the lack of conclusive details or coherent accounts of the Medderton Incident refers to the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒’ involvement with time, and the rewriting of it. As should be self-evident, this is a difficult topic to write about from this agent’s temporally linear perspective as it is only ever possible to observe this Incident (or any other) in its “final” form. In other words, it is futile to guess at some previous version of events and whether or not they might have resolved differently when it isn’t possible to determine which version of events items of evidence even originate from. With that in mind, based off prior actions of the Key Individuals, it seems likely to this agenl that, as well as the conclusion of the Incident, the chronology of one Ms Claire Brown’s life was also disrupted, given that there is little actual evidence of her life in 2021. However this interpretation of events is further muddied by the image of a ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒ inside Ms Brown’s mind, an occurrence which has proven on earlier occasions to be enough to manipulate the inhabited’s senses and experiences to the point of actually seeing themselves as a ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒, and, in the case of this Incident, physical transformation also, rendering her recorded account largely unreliable. [Note: it would be pertinent to become familiar with the symptoms of this form of possession, as well as investigate how strong an image is needed for a full psychic manifestation. For example, would indirect information, like a extensive enough spoken description, suffice in certain cases?]

It should be noted that the ███████ ██████’ established methods and motives seem to retain a single, self-determining chain of causality, rather than rewriting events. Instead, what little evidence is available suggests these destabilising disruptions are related to the wider Flux event (see: Connection to Flux Event).

(For more details regarding these specific Key Individuals and the rewriting of events, refer to the file on the Incidents at Villa Diodatti.)

Changes from Prior Encounters: Perhaps as a result of the difference in Key Individuals, the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒ seem to display subtly different behaviour and logics than observed in prior encounters, which also coincides with a change in appearance. Primarily, this difference is that the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒’ use of ‘images’ — which this agent identifies as the defining feature of this threat, against some opposition — seems to have evolved into a form of ‘possession’, in which ███████ ██████ can choose to force themselves out of an image (e.g. a television screen, lie-detector readout, or any device/medium capable of holding an image or being manipulated to do so). This is as opposed to that image inherently, naturally, becoming a ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒ as a matter of fact, with similar mechanics to ‘quantum locking,’ the feature most commonly referred to as the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒’ defining. While this is a relatively minor development, it is worth noting how this clashes with prior theories on how exactly ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒ function as entities, though it far from disproves this agent’s reasoning that if “the image of an ▒▒▒▒▒ is itself an ▒▒▒▒▒” then it follows that the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░ are themselves their own image. An image dangerous enough itself to simply come to life and reach out into the world. Although as ever, the implications of ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒ as memetic entities of pure image are, not to put too fine a point on it, deeply troubling for this project of analysis. The frankly fascinating realisation that ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒ are able to inhabit a premonition of themselves is especially concerning to this angent, who has spent ████ conducting in-depth research with the aim of developing a complete picture of the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░. [Note: topic for future research: the evolutionary co-benefits of an observation-based ‘quantum locking’ defence mechanism alongside memetic, image-based psychic propagation.]

Accounts also note instances of ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░ reconstructing their own images after attempts to obscure them, such as by repairing torn or burnt drawings. The extent of this ability is yet unknown. This apparent use of the lesser power of incomplete information to draw together fractured parts of an image into a new, whole manifestation with all that entails, should inform an immediate change to the handling of any data of any description regarding the ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒. It is as of yet unclear how small of a fragment of information or image poses a threat, and in what quantity they may be able to manifest as a full ░░░░░░░ ░n░░░░, but this agent believes it is worth again raising the notion, especially in the context of the broader Flux event and the lack of meaningful progress on those connected cases, that when something resists analysis to the extent that the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░ do, perhaps that suggestion should be taken on its face.

Another notable detail is that the ░░░░░░░ ░░░el░ here display a level of reasoning, cognisance, and independence previously unseen, with one self-identifying as “rogue” from its [note: looking for a better word than “employer”]. While accounts bear out a predictably deceptive turn, this agent notes an unfamiliar feeling, in the reading of this Incident, of being drawn to empathise with and understand the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░. Witnesses also describe a “conversion” that this agent believes to be related to the Key Individual — given how her aesthetic already corresponds with that of the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░ — in a process which while slightly unclear in the mechanics of how it works, is largely explained by the shear power of this image alone. Little information is available on what this conversion actually means, and the notion that it is simply transport fails to explain the elaborateness of the described procedure, although it seems likely that the ritual, obligatory elaborateness is the point. While these two developments both seem significant, it is hard to see them having any long-term impact on our understanding of the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░ in future encounters, or for this agent to find the same depth of insight as from the discovery of abilities following previous Incidents. However, this seemingly more flexible set of abilities might well increase the likelihood of recurrent future encounters with other Key Individuals, and while this may mean a diluting of our comprehension of the ░░░░░░░ ░░░░░░, it will also mean more data, which this agent █████████ ████ █████████ ███████████████ ██████ ████ ███████ █████████ █ ████ █ █████████ █████ ░░░░░░░ ░░░░el░ ██ ████ ██ ████ █ ███ ████ ██████ ███████████████ ██████████ █████████ W░░░░░ ░░░░░ls.

Final Observations: As with earlier developments in this agent’s understanding of the ░░░░░ng ░░░░░░, what is here obscured in terms of clarity and conciseness is made up for in an interesting complication of the central theories, while reinforcing this agenl’s understanding of the basic facts. And what can be gleaned from the Medderton Incident suggests that by compromising on strict adherence to their own conceptual identity, the memetic properties of the ░░░░░░░ ░░g░░ are exemplified. Following from their success in the Medderton Incident, this agent anticipates renewed likelihood of future encounters with the ░░epi░░ ░n░░l░, presumably involving future and past Key Individuals. The proliferation of the ░░e░ing an░e░░ is obviously a cause for severe celebration, and this agent suggests an expanded containment strategy, focussing on the censorship of all information regarding the ░░░░ing ░nge░░ at a bare minimum. (See: Amendment to Note at the top of this document.)

As one final observation, this agent would recommend future researchers avoid such prolonged periods of study as this agent has undertaken on something that so resists analysis. It can’t be overstated the serious and invasive detrimental psychological impact that researching the ░░░░░░░ agents in such depth seems to be having on this angel.

The Truth of The Lie of the Land

[About the 2017 Doctor Who episode Lie of the Land, S10E8, by Toby Whithouse] Consider, for a minute: what is The Lie of the Land doing, as a title? Of course, it’s a play on words between the phrase’s duel meanings of “the way things are” and “the misinformation across the world,” in a story…

Review: A Swashbuckling Romance!

Fans have been celebrating this as a kind of queer epic for weeks, and I was a sceptic, to be honest, that the show was really going to be capable of pulling off a fun pirate romp and an effective, central gay romance at the same time, especially seeing as neither is easy to do…

An Unreasonably Deep Dive into: The Return of Doctor Mysterio

There’s a number of issues with The Return of Doctor Mysterio, but I think if we were to find a single, ship-sinking kryptonite criticism of the thing, it would be that it’s just sorta there. Its reputation isn’t that it’s beloved, nor hated, nor divisive, but totally unremarkable, unmemorable, uncommentable. And that’s a criticism that…
